MISTY KNIGHT spin off rumored – Netflix marvel.

Less than 2 years ago, Netflix Marvel verse exploded with Daredevil season 1, which not only was a resounding success, but also shattered some misconceptions about Marvel – that it cannot be dark, that it cannot be gritty, that it cannot have good villains or that it cannot have great supportive characters. In fact, many people now argue that Netflix Marvel has gotten Marvel movies beat with ease in quality, despite the fact Marvel is now on more than a  dozen movies and just 2 shows on Netflix.

One of the most impressive things about Netflix Marvel ( in addition to great acting, writing, direction, vision etc etc etc) is JUST HOW GOOD THE SECONDARY CHARACTERS HAVE BEEN. In Daredevil season 1, as great Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock / Daredevil was (against everyone’s expectations, mind you) it was Vincent D’Onofrio‘s Wilson Fisk / Kingpin who stole the show. Same way, in Jessica Jones, characters like Luke Cage (Mike Colter ), Malcolm Ducasse (Eka Darville ) and Kilgrave ( David Tennant) got high praise. We are already looking at the new Luke Cage series, and it looks fantastic! Then Daredevil season 2 came in, and this time , it was Jon Bernthal‘s Frank Castle / Punisher who stole the show! Not only that, we have confirmation on a Punisher show! ( Praise the heavens!)

A new star rise on Horizon

Continuing this tradition, Luke Cage is just around the corner, and during the SDCC 2016, it was Simone Missick (who plays Misty Knight )  who stole the show. people were impressed with the what they were shown and Ms Missick so much that she became the center of attraction there!

Even the Marvel show runners seem enchanted with her. So much that now there is a rumor AND a demand for a Misty Knight show! Which is just brilliant IMO! I mean, a comics show with a female non white lead, who is completely bad ass? SIGN ME UP ! What else is great that Marvel’s Iron Fist is introducing to us  Colleen Wing (played by the talented Jessica Henwick), so we could have her in the show as her partner too! In comics they have made a formidable and delightful pairing, and Netflix seems the perfect ground for it. Just imagine, a comics tv series with an African American and Japanese female leads!

If you think it is just s rumor, just read what Jeph Loeb, the head honcho of Marvel TV had to say.

Simone just knocked it so far out of the park that we’re still trying to find the baseball. It’s somewhere out there traversing the globe. So it’s really great. And I can tell you that what she’s doing on Luke cage, it’s just incredible. The fans are really going to love it. – Jeph Loeb

This leads me to something that I ABSOLUTELY LOVE about Marvel’s Marvel. It has taken seemingly 2nd, 3rd and even 4th tier characters from Marvel and created something UTTERLY BEAUTIFUL from it.

The amazing world of Netflix Marvel

I mean, yeah, Daredevil is a 2nd tier character, ( don’t kill me , but its true. I know how awesome daredevil arcs are. he has probably the best arcs in Marvel, but fact is, he is still behind the big guys in popularity in general public) but his reputation took a lot of hit under Fox. Marvel actually wanted to exchange him for Silver surfer and Fox cared so less that they did not make an obligatory movie like Fan4uctastic 2015 ( no spelling error, just in case you are wondering). Iron Fist and Luke Cage are no longer as big as they were in 80s, and even then they were tier 2 at best. Jessica Jones is just tier 4. Even though Alias is critically acclaimed, how many casual comics reader had read it?

When Marvel talked about creating a shared universe about these 4 characters, people laughed. I can still remember poor Marvel scrapping the bottom of the trash can jokes. But NOW? It is one of the most respected comics brand. They have shown that they chose characters that were absolutely perfect for this universe and that they had a vision. We are now genuinely excited about these characters who 2 years back barely got an “Ok, cool” out of anyone and the secondary characters of these so called fringe properties are bowling people over! Netflix literally has no place left on its dance card, with them regretfully having to inform fans that DD s03 and JJ s02 can’t come before 2018!

Netflix Marvel has also aroused hopes for other shows that we can be pretty sure are not gonna make to MCU, but we love A LOT! A Blade series is rumored and Wesley Snipes even wants to reprise his role! For a fan of that series, that would be just amazing! A Moon Knight series is rumored as well and I think that could be JUST FANTASTIC! To those who are unaware of him, he is what Batman would be if Batman was crazy/had multiple personality disorder and a deep conviction that everything he did, he did on divine holy orders from an actual God!

What was supposed to be Marvel’s ugly step child has turned into a sensation, and now looks like it is gonna keep giving us brilliant shows on characters that are bad ass and deal with the issues that standard superhero movies just won’t. (Need I remind you that JJ got a Peabody award for “asking unpopular questions about power and consent, while constructing vivid and compelling characters.”?) These shows from Netflix Marvel have created brilliant story lines, fantastic characters, thrilling arcs and at the same time have not forgotten amazing action. Daredevil has been SPELLBINDING with its gritty and yet awesome action.  As fans, what more can we ask for?

Kudos to Netflix Marvel for taking on a risky job and turning it into an industry standard and a benchmark to follow!

PS : There can’t be a Netflix superhero article by me and not push for a Phantom show on it, so here it goes. Ever since the Daredevil came out, I keep thinking there can’t be a better medium for Phantom than Netflix. Gritty grounded action, with well fleshed out story arc over 13 episodes with intermittent adventures in between, this could be great! In fact, way better than a movie, whcih could never really show off Phantom in 2 hours limitation!
